Dear SW Families,

Around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 4, administration at both Kriewald Elementary and Big Country Elementary were alerted to an active shooting taking place in a residential home near the area. Though the incident was not on campus grounds, the proximity of the situation warranted an immediate lockdown. The lockdown took place as students were being released from school, and for the safety of the remaining students parents were asked to sign out and pick uptheir students. All students were released to their parents safely.

The incident turned into a standoff situation and for the safety of residents, Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) blocked off the streets neighboring the home. No one was able to enter or leave the area, including some of our school busses. This created some transportation issues with three of our Southwest High School busses. Parents were contacted to pick up their students back at Southwest High. All students were released to their parents safely.

Kriewald Elementary remained open as an incident Command Center (ICC) for BCSO. We would like to thank the staff at KRE, as well as our District Police, Transportation and Child Nutrition Departments, and all who helped facilitate the ICC late in the night, until the situation was cleared by BCSO.

Parents, please know that the safety of our students is our top priority, we thank you for your patience during this critical time. Though there still might be police presence tomorrow as BCSO continues their investigation, our schools will operate as normal tomorrow.

Thank you.

BiblioTech Digital Library visits BCE
Last Thursday, BiblioTech Digital Library paid us a visit. Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade were excited to hear about the 100,000 digital titles that are available to them with a library card! We also explored some of the free apps that the library offers to members. Our fourth and fifth graders tried Mango Languages and repeated some words in French and Japanese. While students in the early grades laughed as they listened to the eBook "Dragons Love Tacos." We have already received over 180 new applications for library cards! Looks like we will enjoy some great reading this year!BiblioTech
